JOSEFINA GUILISASTI

(Santiago, 1963)

Guilisasti has long systematically researched and analyzed the acts of painting and object making during the modern age. In her tapestry The Raft of the Medusa (2015), the artist brings four different time periods into sync: there is the time of the large format oil painting created by French painter Théodore Géricault in 1818-19; there is the moment when the painting was removed from the Louvre in 1939 to prevent it from falling into Nazi hands; there is the time of a Baroque-inspired textile, which represents the removal of the painting; and finally there is the cinematic and contemporary time of the artist’s animation, which accompanies the tapestry.
