PAZ ERRÁZURIZ
(Santiago, 1944)
Errázuriz has produced one of Chile’s best-known photographic oeuvres. Her output largely consists of black and white images—mostly portraits—which explore life on the fringes of society, capturing different settings such as hospitals, slums, brothels, and even the canals of the country’s southernmost region. The artist usually works in series, such as Adam’s Apple (1982-87) and The Heart Attack of the Soul (1994), which she then presents as aesthetic- thematic clusters. Errázuriz own words summarize her project perfectly: “what I photograph has to do with people who are not at the center, who stand outside and have always been subordinated to power.”
